Planning a private 5G deployment begins by defining its technical and operational requirements. Coverage area, physical environment, device count, spectrum, and core architecture determine the network’s scope and design. Budget approval, however, often depends on a business case that quantifies the resulting costs, projected returns, and payback period.

Moso Networks developed the Private 5G Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Return on Investment (ROI) Calculator to support this analysis by modeling key deployment parameters and their financial impact. Enterprises, systems integrators, managed service providers, and network operators can use the interactive tool to evaluate indoor, outdoor, or hybrid deployments.

Start With the Deployment Context

Users begin by selecting one of ten industry profiles. Options include manufacturing, logistics, ports, healthcare, mining, utilities, and public safety. Each profile preloads editable values for coverage area, connected devices, impacted employees, and labor costs. Separate default percentages quantify expected productivity gains, downtime reductions, quality improvements, and safety improvements.

Users then choose an indoor, outdoor, or hybrid configuration, specify the spectrum model and 5G core location, and select a three- or five-year analysis period. These parameters establish the model’s scope, while the preloaded benchmark values provide an initial estimate. Users can revise those values as site-specific data becomes available.

Build the Complete Cost Model

The calculator organizes costs into two categories based on when they occur. Capital expenditure (CapEx) represents the one-time investment required to design, deploy, and activate the network. Equipment and connectivity costs include indoor and outdoor radio hardware, 5G core, customer premises equipment (CPE), and SIM or eSIM provisioning. Deployment costs cover installation, RF planning, cabling, integration, and commissioning.

Operating expenditure (OpEx) represents the recurring cost of operating and supporting the network. These expenses span hardware maintenance, managed services, network management software, power, and spectrum fees. The selected core architecture affects both cost categories. An on-premises core requires an upfront capital investment and annual software support, while a hosted core replaces the initial purchase with an annual subscription.

Using these cost entries, the calculator determines total CapEx, annual OpEx, and TCO over the selected analysis period. As the results update in real time, users can test how different cost estimates change the projected TCO.

Connect Operational Improvements to Financial Value

With projected costs established, the analysis evaluates six potential sources of measurable value: productivity gains, reduced downtime, quality improvements, lower safety costs, savings from replacing existing Wi-Fi or legacy networks, and optional revenue gains.

Each benefit category follows a defined method for estimating its annual value. For labor, the calculator multiplies the number of impacted employees by the fully loaded annual cost per employee and the expected productivity improvement rate. The model then counts 30 percent of the resulting gross value as hard-dollar savings, producing a more conservative estimate.

For downtime, quality, and safety, users enter the baseline annual cost and expected reduction percentage. The calculator applies that percentage to estimate annual savings. When private 5G replaces an existing Wi-Fi or legacy network, users can include the avoided annual cost as a benefit. Users enter revenue gains separately when applicable and otherwise leave the value at zero.

Each estimated benefit is traceable to its source data and calculation method, allowing technical, operational, and financial teams to review and refine the projections before evaluating ROI.

Evaluate the Return From Multiple Angles

Whenever users revise an underlying value, the dashboard recalculates total CapEx, TCO, annual net cash flow, ROI, payback period, and net present value (NPV).

Each metric addresses a different financial question. TCO, for example, captures the full cost over the selected period. ROI compares projected benefits with that cost, while payback uses annual net cash flow to estimate how long it will take to recover the initial investment. NPV discounts future net cash flows at a fixed eight percent rate to account for the time value of money.

Visualizations place these metrics in context. The dashboard presents cumulative cash flow, annual costs and benefits, CapEx composition, and the contribution of each benefit category. The benefit breakdown indicates whether the projected return depends on several categories or primarily on one.

The current version holds annual OpEx and benefit values constant across the selected period, providing a consistent baseline for initial planning. Organizations developing a detailed investment case can validate the underlying values and apply appropriate inflation or growth assumptions in a separate financial model.

Refine and Share the Analysis

Users compare alternative deployment scenarios by varying project parameters, costs, benefits, and analysis periods. These comparisons show how different configurations affect projected costs and returns before a team finalizes the network design or financial forecast.

Develop a Site-Specific Business Case

The Moso Networks TCO & ROI Calculator links private 5G design decisions to financial outcomes within a structured analysis. Industry benchmarks supply starting values that users can refine as network planning advances.

Before making a final investment decision, organizations should validate technical assumptions against site conditions and engineering requirements, and cost and benefit projections against current vendor pricing and operational data.  The resulting business case supports both the technical design and the executive budget decision.
