We recently sat down with Stephen Leotis, President & Co-Founder of MosoNetworks, to discuss the advantages of 5G over LTE for private indoor wireless networks. Our conversation focused on the use cases and applications that benefit most from 5G, and why many organizations consider the Moso Canopy 5G Indoor 2 Radio (5GID2) a game-changer for private networks. We also highlighted how the 5GID2 enables plug-and-play deployment and delivers secure connectivity with market-leading performance, providing optimal coverage in complex indoor environments.
Higher Data Rates and Lower Latency
Q: What are the advantages of 5G over LTE for private indoor wireless networks?
Stephen: 5G future-proofs private networks, providing advanced connectivity for both private and neutral hosts. Compared to LTE, 5G offers higher data rates, lower latency, and supports more devices. It also enables network slicing, which delivers granular quality-of-service to ensure reliable, high-speed connectivity in challenging environments with stringent SLAs, such as manufacturing.
Q: Are there any cost-performance tradeoffs between LTE and 5G?
Stephen: Private cellular networks support a wide range of use cases, and choosing between LTE and 5G requires customers to weigh several trade-offs. Compared to LTE, 5G offers faster speeds, lower latency, advanced quality-of-service (QoS), and supports more devices. However, as a newer technology, 5G can have higher initial setup costs. As the private 5G market matures and scales, pricing is expected to decrease. Most customers choose 5G for advanced features that LTE can’t offer, such as network slicing, improved mobility, ultra-reliable low-latency communication (uRLLC), and higher device density. MosoNetworks is dedicated to delivering market-leading 5G radios that unlock these capabilities and provide value across diverse use cases.
Top Use Cases for Private 5G networks
Q: What use cases and applications benefit most from private 5G wireless networks?
Stephen: In factories and warehouses, 5G small cells provide reliable, large-scale connectivity for staff, automated processes, security cameras, and Industrial IoT (IIoT) devices. URLLC supports time-sensitive, mission-critical systems, while Reduced Capability (RedCap) offers cost-efficient connectivity for simpler applications, such as sensors and mobile devices. Similarly, healthcare facilities rely on 5G for real-time monitoring, telemedicine, and secure communication, ensuring fast, uninterrupted service for both clinical and administrative operations.
Q: How do federal facilities, offices, and educational campuses benefit from private 5G networks?
Stephen: Federal facilities are deploying 5G small cells for secure, high-bandwidth applications such as surveillance, autonomous systems, and mobile emergency response platforms. Offices and campuses leverage 5G to support seamless collaboration, immersive AR/VR learning, and smart building automation. Additionally, regardless of the organization or vertical market, dedicated 5G networks provide reliable coverage and uninterrupted service for high-priority staff and executive communication.
MosoNetworks 5GID2: The Industry’s First 3GPP Release 16 5G SA Platform
Q: Why is the Moso Canopy 5G Indoor 2 Radio (5GID2) a game-changer for private 5G networks?
Stephen: The 5GID2, the industry’s first 3GPP Release 16 5G SA private network radio, introduces a new class of advanced indoor small cells with lower latency, higher speeds, enhanced quality-of-service, and larger client capacity. The new platform delivers the latest 5G connectivity with up to 4Gbps – four times the speed of current 5G radios – and less than 10 milliseconds (ms) latency to support the most demanding applications including AGVs, AR/VR, critical communications, real-time video streaming, and cloud-based services. 5GID2 expands client capacity to 256 simultaneous clients at launch with plans to add support for up to 512. It efficiently supports diverse use cases across factories, warehouses, hospitals, federal facilities, offices, and campuses. Like all Moso Canopy radios, we pair the new 5GID2 with Moso IMP to simplify rollouts, reduce setup costs with zero-touch provisioning, and provide full network visibility. 5GID2 will launch with pre-integrated support for a number of industry-leading 5G core vendors.
Q: What key 5GID2 features accelerate scalable 5G network deployments?
Stephen: To further simplify the private network deployments, the 5GID2 is built using Qualcomm’s FSM200 5G RAN platform and features a network processing unit (NPU) that enables on-radio user plane function (UPF) and accelerates advanced radio operations. This on-radio UPF reduces the complexity of private networks by eliminating the need for a separate on-premise server running the core UPF – which enables faster deployments at lower costs. The new 3GPP Release 16 platform will deliver support for uRLLC and advanced network slicing to improve reliability and QoS SLAs. Additionally, end-to-end security is built-in, with multiple IPSec tunnels (IPv4/IPv6, CMPv2), encryption, and mutual authentication ensuring secure data transfer across the network. Like Moso Canopy 5G radios today, we also include support for 3GPP Release 17 5G RedCap which enables the use of simpler IoT devices across many use cases and industries.
Q: Are there any other crucial features that come to mind?
Stephen: We incorporated several new features based on customer requests. The addition of external SMA connectors enables the 5GID2 to connect to DAS systems as a signal source. We also added 10Gbps Ethernet and fiber ports to support multi-gig capabilities. Additionally, customers can now daisy chain 5GID2 radios to expand capacity, provide redundancy, and add coverage easily. We are also bringing 5G MOCN neutral host networks to life, delivering multi-carrier connectivity alongside private network capabilities when the MNOs are ready to deploy 5G neutral host networks.
